ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Orbital tumors are an interdisciplinary disease, and surgery is one of the main treatment methods. The oculocardiac reflex (OCR) is a condition of surgery for orbital tumors. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is an association between many surgical factors and the incidence of OCR in orbital tumor surgery. METHODS: Comparisons were made between patients with and without OCR using the Mann-Whitney test, Fisher's exact test, and Chi-square test. When comparing multiple groups (groups > 2), to explain which two groups had differences, post hoc testing was used for analysis, and the differences between groups were judged according to the adjusted standardized residuals. RESULTS: The results showed that the incidence of intraoperative OCR was different based on the different exposed operative field locations (p = 0.021). The OCR incidence in those with lesions involving the orbital apex and lesions adhering to extraocular muscles was higher than that of others (p < 0.001 and p = 0.003). In addition, multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that orbital apex involvement and extraocular muscle adhesion were highly associated with a higher incidence of OCR (p < 0.001 and p = 0.013), while the operative field located in the lateral-superior orbit was highly associated with a lower incidence of OCR (p = 0.029). CONCLUSION: In orbital tumor surgery under general anesthesia, lesions involving the orbital apex and lesion adhesion to the extraocular muscles were independent risk factors for OCR, and an operative field located in the lateral-superior orbit was a protective factor for OCR.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Mucosal healing has emerged as a desirable treatment goal for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Healing of mucosal wounds involves epithelial cell proliferation and differentiation, and Y-box transcription factor ZONAB has recently been identified as the key modulator of intestinal epithelial restitution. METHODS: We studied the characteristics of UXT-V1 expression in UC patients using immunohistochemistry and qPCR. The functional role of UXT-V1 in the colonic epithelium was investigated using lentivirus-mediated shRNA in vitro and ex vivo. Through endogenous Co-immunoprecipitation and LC-MS/MS, we identified ZONAB as a UXT-V1-interactive protein. RESULTS: Herein, we report that UXT-V1 promotes differentiation of intestinal epithelial cells by regulating the nuclear translocation of ZONAB. UXT-V1 was upregulated in the intestinal epithelia of UC patients compared with that of healthy controls. Knocking down UXT-V1 in NCM-460 cells led to the enrichment of pathways associated with proliferation and differentiation. Furthermore, the absence of UXT-V1 in cultured intestinal epithelial cells and colonic organoids inhibited differentiation to the goblet cell phenotype. Mechanistically, the loss of UXT-V1 in the intestinal epithelial cells allowed nuclear translocation of ZONAB, wherein it regulated the transcription of differentiation-related genes, including AML1 and KLF4. CONCLUSION: Taken together, our study reveals a potential role of UXT-V1 in regulating epithelial cell differentiation, proving a molecular basis for mucosal healing in UC.

ABSTRACT

Forest trails provide urban residents with contact with nature that improves health and well-being. Vision and hearing are important forms of environmental perception, and visual and auditory stimuli should not be overlooked in forest trail landscapes. This study focused on the health benefits of the audio-visual perception of forest trail landscapes. Forest density (FD) and forest sounds (FS) in forest trail landscapes were examined as visual and auditory variables, respectively. FD was divided into three levels: high (Hd), medium (Md), and low density (Ld). FS were divided into four levels: quiet natural and anthropogenic sounds (QnQa), quiet natural and loud anthropogenic sounds (QnLa), loud natural and quiet anthropogenic sounds (LnQa), and loud natural and loud anthropogenic sounds (LnLa). The levels of these two variables were combined to create 12 conditions. A total of 360 college students were randomly assigned to 12 groups (mapping onto the 12 conditions; N=30 per group). All subjects performed the same 5-min high-pressure task indoors, followed by a 5-min recovery period of experiencing a simulated forest trail landscape (viewing pictures and listening to sounds). Brain waves, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2, measured with a finger monitor), the pulse rate, and mood indicators were collected to analyse the physiological and psychological responses to the audio-visual forest trail landscapes. The results indicated that higher FD and lower FS improved health benefits. The interaction between FD and FS revealed a pattern of combinations that facilitated stress reduction and positive mood recovery. These results are of theoretical value in that they indicate important audio-visual characteristics of forest trail landscapes. In terms of practical applications, these findings support the construction of urban forest trails to provide health benefits.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common complication of diabetes with nocuous effects on patients' eye health, typically accompanies by excessive inflammation and oxidative stress. Insulin-like growth factor-2 messenger RNA-binding protein 3 (IGF2BP3) was engaged with inflammation, whereas its precise role in the DR process was unclear. And enhanced lncRNA metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) and decreased ascorbic acid (AA) were also found in DR. This study was to explore the regulatory role and mechanism of IGF2BP3, MALAT1 and AA in the high glucose (HG)-induced retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell injury. METHODS: ARPE-19 cells were treated with HG to establish the in vitro RPE cell injury model. The mRNA and protein levels of the gene were evaluated by qRT-PCR or Western blot. Immunofluorescence detected the translocation condition of the p65 protein. Inflammatory factor levels were detected by ELISA assays. Apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. The binding interaction of IGF2BP3 and MALAT1 was validated by RIP-qPCR assays. RESULTS: In HG-induced RPE cell injury, IGF2BP3 expression, inflammatory response and apoptosis were enhanced. Next, the IGF2BP3 activated the NF-κB signalling to promote the RPE cell injury development. MALAT1 could directly bind with IGF2BP3 and up-regulate its expression. In addition, AA ameliorated the HG-induced RPE cell injury through the regulation of MALAT1. CONCLUSION: Ascorbic acid ameliorated HG-induced RPE cell injury by repressing the NF-κB signalling pathway via modulating the MALAT1/IGF2BP3 axis.

ABSTRACT

Recently, the potential role of tRNA-related fragments (tRFs) in ophthalmic diseases has been extensively researched. However, systematic studies on the potential regulatory effects of tRFs in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) are lacking. We used high-throughput sequencing techniques to measure expression levels of mRNAs and tRFs in patients with TAO, and the results were verified by real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR). Next, the potential biological regulatory effect of differentially expressed tRFs was analyzed, and potential downstream target RNAs of differentially expressed tRFs were predicted to explore the potential role of tRFs as therapeutic targets and biomarkers of TAO. A total of 50 tRFs and 361 mRNAs were dysregulated in the TAO group, and tRF5-GluCTC, PMAIP1, HSD17B2 and ATF3 were verified to be significantly differentially expressed in TAO. Our research reveals that several associated pathways likely play a role in the pathogenesis of TAO. By targeting ATF3, HSD17B2 and PMAIP1, tRF5-GluCTC may play a potential role in regulating the orbital fibroblast adipogenic response and fibrotic hyperplasia in patients with TAO.

ABSTRACT

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) affects multiple organs and is characterized by immune-mediated inflammation and fibrosis; IgG-RD affecting orbital tissue is known as IgG4-related ophthalmic disease (IgG4-ROD). This research is aimed at exploring whether symptom duration and common serologic factors, such as IgG, IgE, and eosinophils, are potential risk factors for IgG4-ROD patient relapse after surgery and identifying possible causes of the positive correlation between symptom duration and relapse. This retrospective cohort study included 40 IgG4-ROD patients after surgery. Auxiliary inspection results were obtained before surgery and during follow-up, and relapse risk factors were identified based on previous studies. We used the Spearman rank correlation test to reveal the relationship between symptom duration and relapse time and identified the optimal cutoff value for symptom duration by X-tile. Then, we divided the patients into the long-duration and short-duration groups. Kaplan-Meier survival analyses and log-rank tests were performed to identify the relationship between symptom duration and relapse using X-tile software. Finally, we studied the relationship between previously studied relapse risk factors and symptom duration. The survival curves of the long-duration and short-duration groups were obviously different, and the baseline serum IgG, IgE, and eosinophil levels and asthma concomitant rate were significantly different between the long-duration and short-duration groups. Furthermore, the baseline serum IgG (r = 0.485, P = 0.002), IgE (r = 0.350, P = 0.037), and eosinophil (r = 0.6535, P < 0.0001) levels were positively correlated with symptom duration. Our study shows that IgG4-ROD symptom duration is significantly positively correlated with relapse rate and negatively correlated with relapse time. Symptom duration was positively correlated with serum baseline IgG4, IgE, and eosinophil levels and asthma history, which were potential risk factors for disease relapse. We recommended that IgG4-ROD patients with symptom durations greater than 96 months continue to receive maintenance steroid therapy longer than 1 year postsurgery to reduce the relapse rate.

ABSTRACT

Studies have indicated that natural environments have the potential to improve the relationship between a stressful life and psychological well-being and physical health. Forest therapy has recently received widespread attention as a novel solution for stress recovery and health promotion. Bamboo is an important forest type in many countries, especially in East and Southeast Asia and in African countries. Bamboo is widespread throughout southwestern China. Empirical field research on the physiological effects of bamboo forest therapy is currently lacking. To explore the benefits of bamboo forest therapy on the physiological responses of university students, 120 university volunteers between the ages of 19 and 24 participated in this study (60 males and 60 females) and were randomly divided into four groups of equal size (15 males and 15 females in each). Four sites were selected for the experiment, including two natural bamboo forests (YA and YB), a bamboo forest park (DJY), and an urban environment (CS). During the testing period, all participants were asked to view the landscape for 15 min in the morning and then walk in the testing area for 15 min in the afternoon. Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) were measured as the physiological indexes, and the semantic differential method (SDM) questionnaire was completed for the environmental satisfaction evaluation. The SDM for the subjective environmental evaluation differed significantly among the university students; they obtained a better environmental experience, in terms of sensory perception, atmosphere, climate, place, and space, in the bamboo forest sites. The three-day bamboo forest therapy session improved the physiological well-being of university students. First, the blood pressure and heart rate of the university students decreased, and the SpO2 increased, after the three-day viewing and walking activities of the three-day bamboo forest therapy session. The viewing activities had a more pronounced effect on decreased heart rate in university students. Additionally, three-day bamboo forest therapy had a positive impact on decreased systolic blood pressure and heart rate in the university students, and it was significantly decreased in females, while peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) remained relatively low. Finally, compared with the urban site (CS), the bamboo forest sites effectively improved the university students' physiological state of health, decreased their physical pressure, and stabilized their physiological indicators. These findings provide scientific evidence that a three-day bamboo forest therapy session can increase positive physiological responses. The potential for a longer-term effect on human physiological health requires further investigation.

ABSTRACT

The reduction of interfacial interaction and the deterioration of mechanical properties by the introduction of the paraffin wax is a long-standing problem. To address it, a novel litchi-like core-shell 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX)@paraffin wax@polydopamine (PDA) structure was constructed with a new high melting point paraffin wax (HPW, 101.9 °C) as the inner shell and the bioinspired strong adhesive PDA as the exterior shell. The evolution of element states on the surface of energetic microcapsules conducted by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated the successful introduction of paraffin wax and PDA to form the core@double shell structure. Compared with the core@double shell particles based on the conventional low melting point paraffin wax (69.8 °C), the HMX@HPW@PDA particles demonstrated a 117% increase of impact energy EBAM from 6 J to 13 J by the Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung (BAM) method. Attributed to the stronger interfacial interaction, the litchi-like core-shell HMX@paraffin wax@PDA-based energetic composites also exhibited much superior mechanical properties than that of the corresponding HMX@paraffin wax-based ones and could be equal to or even higher than that of the raw HMX-based ones. In addition, the ß-δ phase transition temperature of HMX in HMX@HPW@PDA crystals was improved by 11.3 °C than that of raw HMX. The simplicity and scalability of the described approach provided a creative opportunity for design and fabrication of energetic composites with high safety performance and mechanical properties.

Forest therapy is a fast-growing treatment approach, as it has the potential to alleviate stressful life events and to improve psychological well-being and physical health. Bamboo forests are widespread in southwestern China. Nevertheless, a knowledge gap on the specific health benefits of bamboo forest (BF) therapy still exists. To explore the psycho-physiologic responses of participants to the effects of BF therapy, 60 male adults aged between 19 and 24, with similar healthy conditions, were selected to participate in this study. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used for the BF sites and the city site (CS) to compare the difference in the psycho-physiologic responses of participants before and after the test. Participants at the BF sites participated in a three-day bamboo forest therapy session, and those at the CS participated in a three-day urban program. Blood pressure, heart rate, and peripheral oxygen saturation were measured as the physical signs, and the profile of mood state (POMS) questionnaire was completed by the participants for the psychological evaluation. Blood was sampled, and natural killer (NK) activity, the number of NK cells, and the levels of corticosterone, granulysin, perforin, and granzyme A/B in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) were measured. All the measurements mentioned above were performed at 08:00 on the first and fourth days within the test. Results indicated that the three-day BF therapy was capable of enhancing positive mood states and also reducing negative mood states in the male participants. The blood pressure and heart rates of the male participants decreased, while the peripheral oxygen saturation increased after the three-day BF therapy session. Furthermore, BF therapy significantly increased NK activity and the number of NK cells and perforin-, granulysin-, and granzyme A/B-expressing cells and significantly decreased the corticosterone level in PBLs in the male participants. The three-day BF therapy session improved the psychological and physiological well-being and enhanced the immune functions of the male college students.

To determine the distribution characteristics of heavy metal pollution in farmland soils and related influencing factors in the Taige canal valley, and guarantee soil environmental quality and safety of agricultural products, 118 topsoil samples were collected from the Taige canal valley's farmland soils, and contents of chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) were measured. A single factor index and comprehensive index were used to assess soil heavy metal contamination with the soil background value of the Taihu Lake basin as the evaluation standard. The multivariate statistical analysis and the geostatistical analysis were combined to identify and apportion the pollution sources of soil heavy metals. The results showed that:The average concentrations of Cr, Hg, As, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, and Cd in soils were 63.25, 0.25, 7.83, 35.24, 77.25, 31.48, 38.37, and 0.16 mg·kg-1, respectively, all of which except for Cr and As were higher than the local soil background values. The content of each heavy metal in most soil samples were lower than the risk screening values for soil contamination of agricultural land. The comprehensive index showed that the degree of pollution of soil heavy metals were at a slightly polluted level in 87.29%, moderately polluted level in 5.93%, and severely polluted level in 6.78% of the sampling. Hg, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd in the watershed soil were affected by agricultural activities and atmospheric deposition. Cr and Ni were affected by the parent material and industrial production activities. As was mainly derived from the parent material.

ABSTRACT

The mechanical properties of composites are highly dependent on the interfacial interaction. In the present work, inspired by marine mussel, the adhesion between energetic crystals of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) and polymer binders was improved. Three types of linear polymeric agents of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG) were grafted onto TATB particles bridged through polydopamine (PDA) films. SEM images showed that 5% grafting contents could evidently form roughness shells on the surface. With a reinforcement at the interface produced by grafting shells, the mechanical properties of polymer-bonded explosives (PBXs) exhibited outstanding mechanical performance, especially for the PTMEG-grafting sample. Examined by the contact-angle test, the PTMEG-grafting sample possessed a value of polar component similar to that of fluoropolymer, leading to an excellent wettability of the two phases. Additionally, different contents of PTMEG were grafted to reveal that the mechanical properties could be improved even with content as little as 0.5 wt.% PTMEG. These results might highlight a correlation between interfacial interaction and macroscopic properties for mechanically energetic composites, while providing a versatile route of grafting on highly loaded composites.

A novel core@double-shell (CDS) 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX) based energetic composite was constructed with an inner nano-1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (nano-TATB) shell and outer polydopamine (PDA) shell fabricated via a facile ultrasonic method and a simple immersion method, respectively. The inner nano-TATB shell was chosen to reduce the sensitivity of HMX while maintaining explosion performance; the outer PDA shell was adopted to enhance the interfacial interaction between explosive crystals and polymer binder. The uniform PDA coating resulted in the increased ß-δ phase transition temperature of HMX from 197.0 to 212.8 °C. Because of the perfect and compact nano-TATB coating on the surface of the HMX particles, the impact sensitivity  was significantly decreased for the HMX@TATB@PDA particles (10 J), in comparison with the physical mixture with an equivalent composition (5 J). Polymer-bonded explosives (PBXs) based on CDS structured particles were designed and characterized in comparison with their core@single-shell (CSS) counterparts or physical mixtures. Due to the strong chemical and physical interfacial interaction, PBXs based on CDS structured particles displayed improved mechanical strength and roughness, storage modulus, as well as creep resistance.

The solid⁻solid phase transition, poor mechanical properties, and high sensitivity has impeded further practical applications of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX) based polymer bonded explosives (PBXs). To address these issues together, a facile and effective route was employed to achieve a coating of polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of explosive crystals via in situ polymerization of dopamine. Additionally, PBXs based on HMX@PDA microcapsules were prepared with a fluoropolymer as polymer binder. Improved storage modulus, static mechanical strength and toughness, and creep resistance has been achieved in as-prepared PDA modified PBXs. The ß-δ phase transition temperature of as-obtained PBXs based on conventional HMX (C-HMX)@PDA was improved by 16.3 °C. The friction sensitivity of the C-HMX based PBXs showed a dramatic drop after the PDA coating. A favorable balance proposed in this paper among thermal stability, mechanical properties, and sensitivity was achieved for C-HMX based PBXs with the incorporation of PDA.

BACKGROUND: Several immunosuppressive therapeutic regimens are widely used to treat Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO), including oral glucocorticoids (OGC), intravenous glucocorticoids (IVGC), retrobulbar injections of glucocorticoids (ROGC) and orbital radiotherapy (OR). The priority among these is unknown. This meta-analysis investigated the efficacy and tolerability of the above regimens. METHODS: The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases and the Chinese Biomedicine Database were searched up to November 18, 2014. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing monotherapies (OGC, IVGC, ROGC and OR) in patients with moderate-to-severe active GO were selected. The main efficacy measures were the response rate, the standard mean difference (SMD) in the reduction in the clinical activity score (CAS) and the mean difference (MD) in proptosis from baseline to the end of treatment. The main tolerability measure was the risk ratio (RR) for adverse events. The pooled estimates and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using the RevMan software, version 5.1. RESULTS: Seven published RCTs involving 328 participants were included in the present meta-analysis, including IVGC versus OGC (3 trials), ROGC versus OGC (3 trials) and OR versus OGC (1 trial). IVGC was more effective than OGC in response rate (RR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.18-1.87) and had an obvious CAS reduction (SMD = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.13-1.25). IVGC caused fewer adverse events than OGC. ROGC and OGC had no statistically significant difference in response rate (RR = 1.16, 95% CI = 0.94-1.42). OR also did not differ significantly compared with OGC (RR = 0.93, 95% CI = 0.54-1.60). ROGC and OR had fewer adverse events, such as weight gain, compared with OGC. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with GO in the moderate-to-severe active phase, current evidence gave priority to IVGC, which had a statistically significant advantage over OGC and caused fewer adverse events. ROGC and OR did not provide greater efficacy than OGC, although better tolerability and fewer adverse events were shown.
